7 Warning Signs That Your Brakes Need Replacing

Over the course of your vehicle’s life, you have to replace your brakes at least two to three times. It could be difficult to know when it is time to get your brakes serviced.

The parts of your brake system have a lifespan. They do not need to be regularly serviced. But they do need replacements when a part is worn out.

The brakes are one of the most important safety component of your car. The following warning signs can help you determine if you are having issues with your brake system.
  • Longer Stopping Distance
The first sign of brake pad wear is when it takes more time and pressure to stop your vehicle. You might observe that you need to press down farther than usual on your brake pedal to stop the car.

Don’t delay and get a brake job immediately, it isn’t long until your brake stops functioning completely.

  • Soft Or Spongy Brake Pedal
In general, power brakes should stop when it is one to one and a half inches from the floor. For manual brakes, the pedal should stop more than three inches from the floor.

If you notice that your brake pedal feels softer, or that it sinks all the way to the floor when you step on it, it’s a sign that you need service, immediately. This indicates that there could be moisture or air in the braking system, or problem with the master cylinder.

  • Brake Light Is On
The red or yellow brake indicator on your dashboard comes on when the parking brake is engaged or that your brakes are due for an inspection.

Be sure that your brakes are fully released when the indicator is on to confirm that it is not the issue. The smart electronics on your vehicle has the capability to alert you on any problems in your car.

  • Low Or Leaking Brake Fluid
If fluid is leaking from the braking system, your car could not create enough power to force the brake pads to clamp hard on the rotors. Leaking could also be a sign that your brake pads are worn down.

  • Vehicle Pulls To One Side
If your car is pulling to one side when braking, this make indicate a brake hose going bad or a caliper problem. One of the brake calipers may be applying more or all the pressure, which results in unbalances stopping.

  • Wobbling, Vibration or Scraping
Pulsation or shudder through the brake pedal while braking maybe the result of uneven rotor. Another possible cause of this is the brake caliper not releasing properly or damage to your brake components from improper lug nut installation.

  • Squealing, Groaning, Or Metallic Grinding Noises
High-pitched noise that stops when you apply the brakes is an indicator of worn out brake pads. Your car may need brake servicing soon. Grinding can also be caused by lack of lubrication in vehicles with rear drum brakes.

Delaying brake service may be putting you and your passengers in unnecessary risk. Knowing when your brakes are having problems which may cause it to fail, could be lifesaving.

Have your brakes checked especially when you are expecting a long road trip. Avoid the unnecessary risks by taking safety precautions. Thanks for pointing out how pedal vibrations can be a sign of failing brakes. I did notice quite a few instances of worrying vibrations on my pedal on our last trip on the mountains. We don’t want to take any chances, so I’ll be sure to have my car checked by professional brake repair services in our area as soon as possible.

Thanks for explaining what to look for when breaks need to be repaired. Lately, my car has been making a weird noise when I apply the brakes. My husband has been telling me to take my car to a brake repair technician so I'll make sure to schedule an appointed for next week.

It caught my attention when you said that brake issues put us at risk and having them fixed can actually be lifesaving. My husband told me he started hearing a grinding noise coming from the brakes of his truck when he was driving home from work yesterday afternoon. I'm glad I read your article so we can look for an auto repair service to replace them ASAP!

Thanks for explaining that worn out brake pads can cause our car to make high-pitched noises whenever we stop. I heard a high-pitched noise coming from my brakes when I was driving my truck around without the radio on yesterday afternoon. I'll have to look for the right parts I need to make the repairs now that I'm aware of the issue!

It's good to know that your brakes might be going bad if your car pulls to one side while braking. For the past couple of days, I have noticed how my car pulls to the side whenever I use my brakes, and I was wondering if that was a sign that something was wrong. I'll have to look into taking my car to an auto service to get the brakes replaced.
